Relation
General Definition
In the classical philosophical tradition, "relation" designates the link between two or more ontologically defined terms, generally being understood as secondary in relation to the substances it connects. In the Ontology of Emergent Complexity, relation is not a subsequent effect, but a primary condition of existence: everything that is only forms in the tension between unstable material instances. Relation is the name of the friction that organizes emergence.
Ontological Variations in the Ontology of Emergent Complexity
Relation As Productive Friction
Relation does not link what is already given: it establishes the very entities it connects. It is material tension that makes possible the emergence of form, meaning, and system.
Relation As Local Instability
No relation is neutral or permanent: every connection implies energetic cost and functional reorganization. Stability is always a transitory effect of the relation.
Relation As Ontological Operator
In OCE, relation is the central operator of emergence: there is only subjectivity, time, or inscription where there is a relation capable of sustaining difference and reorganization.
